Entry Level Railroad Bridge Engineer
Fair Dermody Consulting Engineers is seeking an entry-level Railroad Bridge Engineer to join our growing civil/structural engineering firm. Located in Portland, Maine, FDCE is an industry leader in railroad structural engineering. With a small team of highly skilled and experienced professionals, we are dedicated to enhancing rail infrastructure and making a lasting impact on communities around the country. We see our projects from inception to fruition; meaning, you’ll have exposure to all aspects of the railroad engineering business (inspection, design, construction observation, bridges, track, etc.). We’ll count on you to:
- Work collaboratively in a team environment
- Perform design calculations and load ratings for steel, concrete, and timber railroad structures
- Assist with railroad bridge inspections, including rope access inspections (if desired)
- Interpret existing bridge plans dating up to 125 years old and become familiar with various types of railroad structures
- Draft existing and proposed conditions for railroad bridge rehabilitation projects using AutoCAD
- Perform jacking/temporary support calculations for bridge construction and rehabilitation projects
- Design and draft railroad bridge deck replacement plans
- Assist with engineer estimates and technical specification writing
- Actively participate in professional organizations
What we are looking for:
- BS in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis
- E.I. or E.I.T. Certification
- Passion for bridge engineering
- Coursework in steel and reinforced concrete design (bridge design course a plus)
- Experience with AutoCAD and Microsoft Excel (MathCAD a plus)
- Familiarity with structural engineering software (RISA preferred)
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Self-motivated and willing to take responsibility
- Excellent attention to detail and a strong commitment to quality
