Mechanical Summer Intern

Union Pacific's Mechanical Department intern program enables talented students to experience the work environment of a Fortune 140 company while continuing their education. Students gain insight into the U.S. transportation industry while being paid and working for an industry leader. Assignment will be to one of the major locomotive or car facilities. The summer internship is based on departmental needs and student interests.

Accountabilities

  • Learn and perform core department business group work tasks, processes, and customer services
  • Perform administrative support for department business group managers
  • Develop and execute project action plans and perform team assignments
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contact within departments and across the company
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Assist with project management for various company initiatives and complete administrative tasks and special projects
  • Specific assignments will typically include working with shop employees: 1) create standard work documents for repair tasks, 2) document value stream maps, reduce constraints and improve flow, 3) implement shop process improvement projects, 4) perform industrial engineering projects, 5) work to solve component failure issues, and 6) apply Lean or Six Sigma concepts to business problems
  • Work well independently and have an ongoing respect for heavy machinery associated with the transportation industry and its inherent dangers
  • Perform quality and timely work assignments, make best use of resources, work in cooperation with all employees, and perform according to normal and customary ethical standards


Qualifications

Required
  • College credits equivalent to two years toward an undergraduate degree
  • GPA of 2.7 or higher
  • Proficient Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) skills
  • Basic organization AND prioritization skills
  • Basic time and project management skills
  • Valid driver's license
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to deliver information to coworker(s) and supervisor(s)

Preferred
  • Experience with leading and managing people
  • College credit toward a Bachelor of Science degree focused in Aerospace Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Engineering Management, Industrial Management, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or Supply Chain Management
  • Experience working outdoors in variable weather conditions (consider professional, personal, and volunteer experience)

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to detect and interpret different visual color signals and displays, and identify and determine the speed of moving objects at near or far distances
  • Must have normal color vision
