2022 Summer Trading Operations Intern

The Trading Operations Intern opportunity is designed to provide the successful candidate with hands-on experience with the responsibilities associated with managing a portfolio of generation resources which are spread across the United States in 7 organized markets and the western bilateral market. This opportunity will provide exposure to the strategies we deploy to create value from monetization of long-term physical power positions, hedges, and short-term market opportunities. The successful candidate will also gain valuable experience with management of economic generation dispatch, transmission management, deal capture, and use of energy management software. It is envisioned the candidate will focus on the following areas:
Here’s what you’ll do…
Infrastructure & Analytics
·        Trade entry, validation, and reconciliation between systems. Flow physical power over multiple regions and balancing authorities to relieve congestive energy loads.
·        Reconcile and correct CAISO positions.
·        Balancing of generating assets and strategy positions within systems.
·        Assist traders with tracking profit and losses as well as positions.
·        Work closely with Mid and Back Office Personnel to resolve discrepancies.
·        Prepare ad-hoc reports as needed and identify opportunities to improve processes.
·        Develop working knowledge of the various positions within Energy Management.
·        Assist Asset Management, Energy Management, IT, Mid and Back Office personnel in the implementation of new systems and/or assets into trading systems.
 
Resource Scheduling
·        Daily communication of forecasted wind generation and obligations to counterparties within contracted deadlines.
·        Balance generation schedules with energy trades to meet contractual obligations on a daily basis.
·        Manage the use of Avangrid’s long-term and short-term.
·        Proper use of energy management software to capture all scheduling activity including deals, schedules, transmission, asset position, and E-tags.
·        Submit bids and schedules to CAISO, MISO, PJM, ERCOT, NYISO, and ISONE on a daily basis.
·        Perform preschedule checkout process and prepare required reports for use during real-time scheduling activities.
·        Perform checkout process with BPA to confirm balanced generation and transmission schedules have been submitted.
·        Ability to rotate with other schedulers to provide 5-day coverage for all power markets.

·        Observe negotiation of transactions to financially optimize corporate assets including renewable and thermal generation.
·        Observe the capture of market arbitrage opportunities utilizing transmission to link markets across the United States.
·        Observe the capture of real-time arbitrage opportunities and manage day-ahead and real-time transactions.
·        Provide market pricing for day ahead to real-time transactions.
·        Create NERC E-tags and manage transmission via OASIS.
·        Capture transactions accurately in Avangrid’s energy management system.
·        Provide generation and transmission schedules to ISO’s, control areas and transmission providers.
·        Adhere to effective internal business and industry controls.

Education & Experience Required:
  • Currently a sophomore or junior pursuing a Bachelor’s or first year in Masters/MBA Degree
  • One or more summers remaining prior to the completion of undergraduate or master’s degree
  • Ability to work hours and days as directed by the managers of each business unit, not to exceed 40 hours in a week.
