Maintenance Worker

Summary

Applicants must possess and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement. You must upload a copy of your license.

The primary purpose of the position is to operate and performs maintenance on a variety of vehicles such as ten-wheel dump truck, front end loader, bulldozer, road brooms, street sweepers, asphalt laydown machine, etc. Operates equipment on flat or rolling terrain, in, in refuse dumps, and at construction sites with simple terrain problems.

Duties

 

The primary purpose of the position is to perform recurring building and/or utility maintenance and operation duties and to assist journeymen and other higher-graded workers. Incumbent utilizes knowledge and skills in several trades and crafts.

As a Maintenance Worker you will:

Working largely without direct supervision, operates and performs minor maintenance on a variety of vehicles such as front- end loader, 5-ton dump truck, hot oil distributor, road brooms, street sweepers, asphalt lay down machine, etc.

Operates equipment on flat or rolling terrain, construction sites, wet and/or snowy conditions.

Performs duties such as plowing snow, spreading road material, hauling materials to job site, loading material on dump truck, removing rockslides, clearing sides of roads, removing hazardous trees, and compacting asphalt etc.

Perform functions such as painting, plumbing; trails and grounds work; trash and debris clean-up.

About the Park:

George Washington Memorial Parkway was established by Congress on May 29, 1930, through Public Law 71-284, the Capper-Cramton Act. The parkway runs along the Potomac River through two states-Virginia and Maryland-as well as the District of Columbia, protecting the landscape and natural shoreline of the river while offering magnificent scenic vistas of Washington, D.C., and the Great Falls of the Potomac. Along its route, the parkway also connects several important historic sites, memorials, and scenic and recreation areas in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

  • U.S. Citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License with airbrake endorsement. You must upload a copy of your license.
  • You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • This position is designated Emergency Essential.
  • You must be able to lift 75 lbs.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected. The display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50
pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposure to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposure to dust, dirt wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment, paints, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks and biting insects.
