Engineer I/II/III - System Operations Center (SOC)

Job Summary

Dominion Energy Virginia’s Electric Transmission (ET) System Operations Center Engineering department is seeking a motivated Engineer to support the Company’s evolving Transmission grid.  The primary responsibility for this role is to support the System Operations staff in questions related to protection schemes, compliance, STATCOMS, IEC-61850, and the largest data center load growth in the world. 
 
Job Responsibilities – Engineer I:
•    Learn basic protection and operating philosophies and practice technical concerns that may arise. This is an exciting time to join our team as we are involved in industry-leading projects and initiatives like interconnecting 5000 MW of solar generation in the next 5 years, the first utility-owned offshore wind project in United States federal waters as they apply to real-world scenarios.
•    Performs engineering calculations, analysis, and research for ET protection schemes and operating conditions.
•    Provide technical support to the System Operators and Reliability Engineers
•    Provide technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects
•    Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

 
Job Responsibilities – Engineer II/III:
•    Performs engineering calculations, analysis, and research for ET protection schemes and operating conditions.
•    Distinguished from Engineer I by increased complexity in application of engineering skills required.
•    Provide advanced technical support to conceptual engineering teams, project management teams and ET Field Organization throughout the course of capital projects.
•    Participate in various company teams and industry-level organizations to enhance SOC’s operating performance.
•    Participate in trade and industry organizations and benchmarking activities.
•    Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

 

This position is located in Richmond, VA and works a hybrid schedule subject to change due to business needs. Relocation assistance may be provided.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

The knowledge, skills, abilities and experience required for entry into this job include the following:

•    Strong time management skills with the ability to independently plan and organize work assignments.
•    Strong oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
•    Equally effective with working independently or in a team environment.
•    Ability to think analytically and learn to apply engineering theories and concepts to complex problems.
•    Experience with electric transmission protection schemes is preferred. 
•    Understanding of IEC 61850 communication protocol for intelligent substation protection is a plus. 
•    Programming skills for automation of tasks (e.g., Python, .NET, C#, etc.) is a plus.
•    Experience with PSSE is a plus.
•    Ability to interpret codes, regulations, and practices.
•    For military applicants: Military service members and veterans with ranks from E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3, plus appropriate equivalent combination of education and years of experience as outlined (above/below).


Engineer I: 0-2+ years of engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience).  
•    Basic understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems
•    Basic understanding of the principles of transmission relay protection a plus

 

Engineer II: 3+ years/ Engineer III: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience (Note: A partial year of related work experience of 6 months or greater will be considered one year towards the qualifications; A an advanced degree can count as one year experience)
•    Understanding of AC/DC fundamentals, including three-phase power systems.
•    Understanding of the principles of transmission relay protection preferred

Bachelor's degree

Note: Upcoming engineering graduates with a projected graduation date of no later than August 30, 2024, who also meet the engineering criteria will be considered.

 

REQUIRED ENGINEERING CRITERIA: 
 
For placement of a candidate in the Engineer job series, the following criteria must be met: 

 

  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or
  • Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET, or
  • Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
