Job Summary

The San Diego County Office of Education is recruiting for an Instructional Aide - Deaf and Hard of Hearing DHH for Davila Day School with the South County SELPA Department of the Student Services and Programs Division. This position provides specialized tutorial assistance to deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students in the DHH classroom or mainstreamed into regular classes; assists deaf and hard of hearing students in the development of communication skills in spoken English or American Sign Language (ASL); performs a variety of routine clerical duties for the deaf and hard of hearing instructional program; may assist medically fragile or physically disabled students in performing daily living activities. Bilingual (English/American Sign Language) required for this vacancy.

Requirements / Qualifications

This position requires a combination of education, training and experience which includes possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; completion of college-level course work in general academic subject areas such as math, science, and English; and work experience in a school or other educational environment. Experience working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals is highly desirable Candidates must also demonstrate Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA, previously referred to as the NCLB Act) compliance. 

In order to satisfy the paraprofessional requirements of the ESSA, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

 • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent; AND, 

• Completion of at least 48 semester units at an institution of higher education; OR 

• Obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; OR 

• Successful completion of an assessment*, administered by the San Diego County Office of Education, in basic reading, writing, mathematics skills, and the ability to assist with instruction. 

*The ESSA exam will be administered by the SDCOE HR office to candidates who meet minimum requirements for the classification. 

Some positions in this classification may be designated bilingual (English/American Sign Language). Positions designated bilingual require proficiency in American Sign Language and the ability to translate English to ASL and ASL to English. Positions designated as bilingual receive a 5% bilingual stipend.

• Copies of transcripts verifying completion of at least 48 semester units of college coursework OR an associate’s (or higher) degree (those who do not possess either may request to take the ESSA exam through SDCOE).

The results of this recruitment will be used to establish an eligibility list to fill the current vacancy and any other vacancies in this classification for the next six (6) months, or until the list is exhausted.
