Safety and Occupational Health Specialist
USDA Agricultural Research Service is currently recruiting for a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist at https://www.ars.usda.gov/northeast-area/wyndmoor-pa/eastern-regional-research-center/ in Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania.


Duties: 

  • Reviews Chemical Hygiene Plans developed in individual research programs.
  • Provides information and assistance to the Location Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Serves as member of the Safety and Health Committee, keeping the committee informed of safety regulations as they apply to the location research sites and activities.
  • Prepares and maintains accurate documentation/record of all safety-related matters to assure compliance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Serves as contact person for vendor(s) under contract for hazardous waste disposal. Coordinates packaging and organizes program for hazardous waste disposal.
  • Develops a rapid response plan for chemical spills and safety related emergencies for the location.


Experience: Based on grade level, one year of specialized experience which is directly related to the work of the position to be filled and which has equipped the applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience managing safety or health management programs in a research laboratory environment; coordinating annual safety inspections for offices, laboratories, or equipment; and providing informal instruction to employees regarding laboratory safety procedures.
OR
Education: Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology; or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
OR
A combination of the graduate level education and specialized experience as described above.
