Seasonal Natural Resources Technician I - Fisheries

LOCATION OF POSITION

Matapeake Work Center, 301 Marine Academy Dr, Stevensville, MD

Main Purpose Of Job

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Fishing & Boating Services is accepting applications to fill two seasonal/contractual Natural Resources Technician I positions. Both positions are located at the Matapeake Work Center in Stevensville, MD.

POSITION DUTIES

Position 1: This 6-month position will support the Fisheries Ecosystem Assessment Division (FEAD). This position will assist FEAD in the collection of fish and habitat data in tidal tributaries throughout Maryland.

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Identifying Chesapeake Bay fish species (juvenile and adult stages)
  • Processing ichthyoplankton and stomach content samples in the lab
  • Assist with field sampling and water quality collections conducted from boats and onshore during summer field seasons
  • Assist with data entry (Excel) and office duties
  • Equipment and net maintenance

Position 2: This 5-month position will support the Blue Crab Program with field surveys that monitor the status of the blue crab population in the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay. 

Job responsibilities will include:

  • Assist with the Summer Trawl Survey to sample blue crabs and key finfish species over a wide range of the Chesapeake Bay
  • Assist with the Cooperative Data Collection Program from commercial crabbing vessels
  • Assist with data entry (Excel) and office duties
  • Equipment and net maintenance

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Completion of sixty credit hours from an accredited college or university, 18 of which are in biology, biochemistry, environmental science, forest technology, arboriculture, aquaculture, natural science, natural resources management, botany, marine biology, marine ecology, physical oceanography, ichthyology, fisheries management, wildlife management, zoology, or a natural resources management related field of study.

Experience: None.

Notes:

1. Additional experience performing technical biological work in the field of forestry, arboriculture, wildlife, aquaculture, natural resources management, or fisheries may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in the natural resources management and biological sciences classifications or natural resources management and biological sciences specialty codes in the biological science technician field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required education.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to applicants with prior fisheries experience, have experience in the identification of Chesapeake Bay fish, using sampling equipment (trawl, seines, etc.), and laboratory experience with microscopes.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Persons appointed to positions in this classification may be assigned duties which required the operation of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess the appropriate operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
