Pre-Op Veterinary Nursing Assistant

This position will assist the Surgery Team at Ryan Hospital with preparing patients for surgery.

Job Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the ability to provide preoperative skills such as verifying patient identification, procedure, and surgical site.

Facilitate clipping or trimming of hair in the anesthesia prep area and only if necessary.

Ensures clipping will provide the necessary exposure for the surgical procedure, any possible drain sites or possible extension(s) of the operative incision, and surgeon preference.

Inspect the skin integrity for signs of infection during clipping and alert a clinician to any questionable findings.

Obtain approval for the clipped site from a surgery resident or faculty clinician.

Demonstrate the ability to perform a gross skin prep in the anesthesia prep area by selecting the correct prep scub/solution for the situation (i.e., chlorhexidine gluconate/alcohol prep, iodine povacrylex/alcohol prep, chlorhexidine gluconate, povidone-iodine, etc.) and preparing the appropriate surgical prep site necessary.

Ensure patient tables and clippers are appropriately disinfected after each use, soiled linen is placed in designated laundry bins, and any residual loose hair/debris from the patient is removed.

Advise the supervisor of broken clipper equipment and low inventory.

Clip the patient’s nails while anesthetized.

Qualifications

  • High School Grad/GE Degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required

Monday through Friday 9-2pm
