Job Summary:
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 10 hours per week) Temporary Laboratory Technician 2 position for the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station at Oregon State University (OSU).
This position exists to support an ongoing salmon shark microplastics project in Oregon State University's Big Fish Lab. The goals of the project are to determine the quantities and types of microplastics consumed by salmon sharks on the Oregon Coast and to identify the degree of trophic transfer between sharks and their prey - a topic that has been completely unexamined to date. The researcher in this position will collect data on microplastic consumption by sharks and their prey (hake) in a laboratory setting through 1) dissection, digestion, and filtration of salmon shark samples and 2) classification of microplastics using established methods (i.e. microscopy and spectroscopy).

Key Responsibilities
Stomach content analysis: dissecting salmon shark stomachs and processing stomach contents for prey species in a laboratory setting under a fume hood. – 10%
Sample filtration running dissolved stomach lining and dissolved prey samples through a vacuum filtration system and collecting filters for later microscope analysis – 30%
Microscopy: analyzing filters under a microscope in a fume hood for microplastic particles and categorizing them. This also involves the collection and placement of those particles and fibers onto a slide for further analysis and categorization – 50%
FTIR spectroscopy – analyzing collected fibers and particles using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to classify plastic types – 10%
What You Will Need
• Ability to work independently and follow direction from senior researchers and collaborators.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
• Experience with data entry, organization, quality control, and management using spreadsheet software
• Experience with vacuum filtration
• Ability to work in an environment that controls for contamination
• Experience performing dissections
• Experience with microscopy
• Experience working with potentially hazardous materials
• Some knowledge of shark foraging ecology and predator-prey dynamics in Oregon waters
• Some knowledge of microplastics and ecotoxicology
• Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Researcher will be primarily working in a controlled laboratory setting (i.e. Oregon State University’s Brander laboratory) with the appropriate standards for microplastic work (i.e. access to a fume hood, muffle furnace for sterilization of equipment, microscope, FTIR capable machinery, etc.). Schedule will be determined by researcher and equipment availability, given that this is a shared workspace. No travel or evening work is expected.
