Job Summary:
This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Science Laboratory Preparator position for Oregon State University - Cascades Campus.
This position will be located in Bend, Oregon.
This position provides support to science laboratory teaching programs by preparing chemistry or biology laboratories for use by students and faculty, including, but not limited to, preparing media, solutions, and other teaching materials; maintaining laboratory equipment and instrumentation; budgeting, sourcing, and procuring all supplies, and testing the laboratory exercises/experiments to determine if their directions and procedures are appropriate to achieve desired results.
OSU-Cascades, located in Bend, Oregon, is a campus of Oregon State University. Established in 2001, the university currently enrolls more than 1,300 students in bachelor's and master's degree programs. The campus expanded to a four-year university in 2015, and opened its 10-acre campus in fall 2016. The Oregon legislature approved additional funding in 2017 and 2018 for continued campus expansion, which is currently in progress. The campus has ambitiousenrollment goals to reach 3,000 students and is engaged in building a culturally diverse and community-centric educational environment.

Key Responsibilities
50% Teaching Laboratory Preparation and Maintenance.
• Typical tasks: Before daily laboratory course start times, assembles and organizes all supplies and equipment to be used in all teaching laboratories; sets up each student work station with proper supplies and equipment so that everything needed to conduct laboratory exercises is immediately available for students’ use; checks equipment which will be used to assure that it is working properly; cleans classroom after each class period and sets up for next class; collects, manages, and disposes of all chemical and biological waste; assigns, coordinates, and reviews the work of any student workers who may be assisting in the setup and maintenance of laboratories.
• Train student workers in the proper handling and maintenance of equipment and materials and the correct procedures for setting up and preparing teaching laboratories.
• Laboratory Procedure Testing. In advance of the laboratory course, conducts the laboratory experiments which will be performed by the students to test directions and procedures for these experiments which have been prepared by the teaching staff; analyzes the procedures used and results achieved to determine if the directions and procedures are appropriate for student use in terms of reliability, ease of execution, and learning value; provides technical interpretation of test results to supervisor, teaching staff, graduate teaching assistants and others; proposes alternative procedures or techniques to teaching staff that may be more appropriate in achieving the specific results desired, more efficient in terms of student/faculty time, and/or more cost-effective.
30% Other duties as assigned.
• May include, but not limited to, any of the following: maintaining lab inventory; budgeting, ordering and receiving; recording of materials used by students; determining student-based additional charges or refunds; supporting faculty in determining student lab fees; supporting faculty in developing new laboratory course work as the university grows.
10% Chemical Stockroom & Equipment Maintenance.
• Typical tasks: prepares stock of the chemical and media solutions used in a variety of undergraduate-level laboratory experiments, including determining the correct formula and recipe to be used, and the amount of materials to be prepared; regularly checks quality and quantity of the materials being used in the laboratories and replaces materials when necessary to maintain fresh quality; operates instruments and equipment used in teaching laboratories to test performance; calibrates and aligns equipment and instruments as necessary to maintain accuracy and validity of test results; performs routine maintenance, including analytical instrumentation, spectrophotometers, pH meters, and analytical balances among other equipment; and monitors inventories and prepares purchase orders for all new equipment, supplies, and consumables.
• Monitor chemical storage and ensure compliance with all federal, state, local and university guidelines
10% Work with University EH&S dept to maintain a safe working environment in the laboratories for all students, faculty, and staff. Maintains safety and/or EH&S records for any student, faculty, or staff operating within the teaching laboratories.

What We Would Like You to Have
Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or other closely related field with a background in a number of science sequences in chemistry specifically including General, Organic and Analytical Chemistry;ORBachelor’s Degree in, Biology, Microbiology or other closely related field with a background in a number of science sequences in biology, specifically including Microbiology.
More than one year of biology or chemistry laboratory experience which provided a knowledge of laboratory testing and/or demonstration methods and techniques.
Experience using and maintaining laboratory instruments and equipment.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Working schedule is based on a 40 hour week and is expected to be during typical laboratory hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00-5:00). Scheduling can be flexible to meet specific needs. Weekend or evening hours may occasionally be required to support Student Teaching Laboratories as scheduling demands.
Extended standing and some lifting is involved in the job. The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations.
Must be able to kneel, stoop, crawl, and crouch. Lifting objects vary daily, ranging from 1lb to over 50lbs. Individual is exposed to safety hazards including contamination and exposure to hazardous materials or toxic substances may exist. Must be able to climb or pull self upward for 1 to 2.5 percent of the time. Use of computer screen is anticipated less than 25 percent of the time. Health/Safety exposures include noise extremes for 20 percent of the time.
