We are now accepting applications for peer writing consultants to begin working in Winter 2025 . You must be able to work at least 8 hours per week and commit to working three quarters in the Writing Center. Interested applicants must be able to work in-person at least two days per week. Remote work is also available after the first quarter of employment, depending on the unit's needs at that time.

Peer writing consultants, also known as tutors, are students who help other students from across UWT disciplines with all aspects of writing and reading processes. We focus on collaborative and anti-racist strategies for writing development.

Submit the following documents through Handshake:

  1. Resume or cv
  2. One sample of your writing (preferably in an academic genre; a paper written for a previous class is a good choice)
  3. A faculty recommendation letter or email (may be sent directly to uwtteach@uw.edu by your recommender; if your recommender is sending separately, attach a document that states the name of the recommender and when the recommendation should arrive)
  4. A cover letter reflecting on your own experiences as a writer and how you envision contributing to tutoring work. Please address the following questions, ideally using specific examples:
  • Reflect on one or two things you have learned about writing since starting college. Did these things surprise you or align with some of your previous writing experiences?
  • How has feedback from others influenced your writing and what kinds of feedback do you give others on their writing?
  • How did the video confirm or challenge your assumptions about being a writing tutor?
  • What characteristics and skills would you bring to the writing center?

Duties & Responsibilities

·        Collaborate one-on-one or in groups with students from all disciplines and learning backgrounds to support writing development

·        Assist with workshops, orientations, and class visits

·        Attend weekly staff meeting

·       Work through independent training modules to build disciplinary writing knowledge and learn about tutoring approaches

·        Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications and Desired Skills

  • Current UW student available to work at least one full academic year (three quarters)
  • Excellent listening, responding, and analytical reading skills
  • Self-directed and ability to independently solve problems
  • Knowledge of or interest in different writing styles and genres
  • Interest in developing further as a writer
  • Ability to explain and demonstrate concepts in multiple ways
  • Desire to work with all writers at UWT and to help others learn and understand
  • Proficiency with word processing software, especially Microsoft Word
  • Commitment to the anti-racist and inclusive mission of our writing center
