Natural Resource Program Coordinator - Anadromous Fish Specialist

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game is seeking to fill a current opening for a Natural Resource Program Coordinator - Anadromous Fish Specialist within the Fisheries Bureau at our Headquarters in Boise.

What We Offer: 

General Responsibilities (all positions):

  • Coordinates in-state fishery management program and recommend needed research. 
  • Prepares and proposes modifications to fishery management plans.
  • Coordinates fish regulation development with regional staff. 
  • Responds to information requests from internal and external customers.
  • Identifies problems and recommends solutions to increase angling opportunity. 
  • Represents department and State of Idaho at various meetings and conferences with federal agencies, Native American tribes and other states regarding fishery resources. 
  • Works to communicate science to the public through writing, testifying hearings or media interviews.
  • Experience with data management and manipulation including databases and spreadsheets, and statistical analysis of data.
  • Experience writing technical reports, or peer reviewed publications.

Specific Responsibilities – Anadromous Fish Specialist:

  • Coordinate Columbia River Policy issues with Northwest Power and Conservation Council, NOAA Fisheries, state fishery staff and tribal fishery staff. Includes program objectives, reporting, budgeting, project reviews etc.
  • Review and provide technical input on documents and plans related to fisheries management and mitigation.
  • Administer Idaho state scientific collection permit program. 
  • Coordinate Fisheries incidental impact reporting for Endangered Species Act (ESA) listed fish.
  • Coordinate with state, federal and tribal fishery management agencies on conservation and enhancement activities for salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River Basin. 
  • Coordinate state-tribal fishery team to prepare run reconstruction for Snake River steelhead. 
  • Coordinate reviews and comments on biological opinions and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents related to fisheries.
  • Responsible for budget tracking and development.

Minimum Qualification: (This qualification is required.)

  • Considerable knowledge of fisheries management, scientific method, science communication, science review and writing (Typically gained by at least nine years of professional work experience in Fisheries Management or a closely related field OR has successfully completed a bachelor's degree in Fisheries Management or a closely related degree from an accredited college or university and has at least five years of professional work experience in Fisheries Management or a closely related field OR has successfully completed a master's degree in Fisheries Management or a closely related field from an accredited college or university and has at least three years of professional work experience in Fisheries Management or a closely related field.)

Minimum Qualification Specialty Areas: (These qualifications are required for the current opening.)

  • Experience managing fisheries-related projects (Typically gained by experience leading the design and implementation of two or more fisheries-related field investigation projects (not necessarily master’s level).)
  • Experience with data management and manipulation including databases and spreadsheets, and statistical analysis of data (Typically gained by experience using databases or spreadsheets to analyze data, produce reports, and develop visual aids for presentation of results.)
  • Experience writing technical reports, or peer reviewed publications on fisheries-related topics (Typically gained by experience completing a thesis or dissertation, OR experience writing technical reports or peer reviewed publications (e.g. agency reports, issue papers.)
  • Some knowledge of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and or the National Environmental Policy act and its implementation (Typically gained by experience as a technical contributor or reviewer in the development of biological assessments, biological opinions, resource management plans or environmental impact statements ESA consultation; or ESA permitting.) 

The ideal candidate will have experience working with internal teams, multi-agency teams, or other collaborative groups to accomplish fisheries-related objectives and they will also have experience making oral presentations to groups on fisheries-related topics. Additional consideration may be given at the time of interview to candidates who have this training or experience.
