Transit Mechanic
This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
Depending on the department the purpose of this class within the organization is to perform preventive maintenance, technical diagnostic, service, and repairs. The position at Murfreesboro Transit will work on Murfreesboro Transit buses and support vehicles and will be subject to FTA testing.
General Essential Functions:
- Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.
- Maintains a clean and safety, well-organized work area and equipment for efficient job performance.
This position is responsible for coordinating repairs and preventive maintenance with the City Transportation Department to ensure on-time performance of maintenance is maintained in accordance with Federal Transportation Administration requirements.
- Inspects, diagnoses, and performs minor repairs for all Transit equipment and vehicles.
- Transport vehicles to Fleet Maintenance for services and repairs.
- Conducts and/or coordinates preventative maintenance inspections for all Transit vehicles and equipment, as required.
- Maintain knowledge of required maintenance software, including diagnostic software to perform the necessary diagnostic functions and repairs.
- May assist in the training of other mechanics.
- Make reports, verbal or written, pertaining to work activities on shift.
- Assists in snow removal and facility maintenance as needed.
Additional Duties:
- Performs other work as assigned.
Physical Demands:
Performs work that involves frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, and stooping.
- Requires use of fingers and gripping when using hand tools and power tools, such as impact driver, ratchet and socket set, and screwdrivers.
- Occasional crawling.
- Ability to reach, climb, apply leverage from unusual positions and to work on and creep under vehicles.
- Must be able to work in varied environmental conditions.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
- Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Requires two (2) years related mechanical experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
- Must have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with passenger endorsement or the ability to obtain a CDL license with passenger endorsement within six (6) months in position.
