Position Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Air (BOA), Air Quality Planning Section, Regulatory Development Unit, State Implementation Plan is seeking to hire an Environmental Protection Engineer I.   This position performs a variety of closely supervised functions that are designed to provide a basic introduction to, and training in the explicit engineering programs for the Regulatory Development Unit.  The ideal candidate will assist a higher-level engineers in the development of environmental regulations and policies within the Agency, and in meeting state requirements of the federal Clean Air Act and the Illinois Environmental Protection Act.

Essential Functions

  • Assists higher level staff in the Bureau of Air/Air Pollution Control (BOA/APC), Air Quality Planning Section (AQPS), Regulatory Development Unit, in the evaluation of emission control technologies applicable to industrial/commercial related emissions.
  • Assists in collecting engineering data and performing engineering analyses concerning current and future control technology as part of the regulatory development process. Develops technical support for the regulatory process.
  • Assists in performing air quality analyses and engineering reviews of routine industrial/commercial related projects (e.g., as described in letters of intent, negative declarations, environmental impact statements, etc.).
  • Assists in gathering and compiling data from Annual Emissions Reports for the purposes of preparing the state emissions inventories.
  • Participates and observes higher level staff in providing testimony to the Pollution Control Board in support of regulatory proposals involving emission control technologies.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with a bachelor's degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of coursework associated with environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, and air pollution specialties), civil (sanitary, hydraulic, and hydrology specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public health, electronic, acoustical, or aeronautical engineering or engineering mechanics or a closely related engineering specialty.
  • Requires no previous experience.
  • This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  • Prefers the ability to utilize a personal computer and software applications such as MS Word and Excel software.
  • Prefers the ability to utilize Access or similar database programs.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Requires a valid and current appropriate drivers’ license.
  • Requires the ability to travel in performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be requested or required/mandated to work overtime including
    scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Requires ability to attend seminars, conference, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other
    industry related topics to the job duties.
  • Requires the ability to pass a name-based background check.
