PhD Opportunities in Microsystems & Bioinstrumentation (ECE) — UNC Charlotte

We are recruiting fully funded PhD students to develop micro- and nanoscale sensors and instruments for next-generation biomedical discovery at UNC Charlotte.

Part-time opportunity now: One paid part-time position is open immediately. Candidates can contribute to project-relevant assignments—especially cleanroom training and fabrication—while they await graduate program start in Spring 2026 or Fall 2026.

What You’ll Work On

MEMS/BioMEMS: microfabrication, microfluidics, AFM/SPM, microneedle thermocouples, fluidic microcantilevers

Bio-instrumentation: low-noise electronics, embedded/FPGA control, automation & mechatronics

Computation & Imaging: device simulation (FEA/COMSOL/ANSYS), signal & image processing, machine vision/ML

Bioengineering: tissue engineering and iPSCs to interface living systems with our measurement platforms

What We’re Looking For

Background in ECE/ME/BME/Physics (BS or MS)

Curiosity, initiative, and a strong maker mindset

Why Join

Fully funded PhD (assistantship + tuition coverage per program policies)

Hands-on training in MEMS, Microsystems, BioMEMS, and engineered tissue/iPSCs that enable new measurements

Opportunities to publish, present, and build IP with translational paths

Highly collaborative environment across engineering and biomedical science

Start dates: Spring or Fall 2026 (earlier/later considered).
