Fish Ageing Lab Technician

VMRC Fish Ageing Lab is seeking ONE part-time technician starting at $14 per hour. The technician will work in the lab both independently and in team environment to process fish/fish carcasses to collect biological data such as weight, length, sex, and maturity, and to collect and process calcified structure samples (hard-parts) such as otoliths, scales, spines, and opercula. Other duties include but are not limited to organizing samples, maintaining equipment, cleaning workstations and the lab. The technician may also participate in fieldwork with other VMRC Fisheries staff to collect and process fish samples on occasion.
 

Qualifications: Applicants with knowledge of fish species, majors in Marine Science, Biology, or Oceanography and experience dissecting animal specimens are preferred. The candidates must be able to interpret and follow protocols for safe data collection and for sample processing, ensuring high quality ageing data. The position requires long sitting hours with detailed handling and processing of small hard-parts, and frequent lifting, bending, and standing. The technician must be able to lift up to 30 lbs. individually and team lift up to 100 lbs.
 

Location and Hours: The lab is located at 380 Fenwick Road, Hampton, VA 23651.  The technician should be able to work 20 hours per regular workweek, Monday-Thursday 8 am-5 pm, and Friday 8 am-2:30 pm. Based on agency needs, hours may be flexible.  Position is hourly through a Temporary Service agency.
