Graduate Studies Mentor
Purpose:
The Office of Graduate Studies & Research is charged with oversight of all CSUMB graduate
programs. This work includes providing service to current graduate students and recruiting
undergraduate students into graduate school. We are seeking a mature, self- motivated,
innovative, outgoing graduate student [preferred, but undergraduates will be considered] to build our strengths in both those areas. The position includes training sessions so that you can successfully mentor your graduate school peers and undergraduate students. The successful candidate will help create events where mentoring and social engagement can be leveraged to promote awareness of, and success in, graduate school. The work will include networking and collaborating with students, staff and faculty across campus.
Responsibilities:
● The Graduate Studies Mentor provides support for projects within the Office of Graduate
Studies & Research.
● Help create and run events that engage undergraduate students who want to learn
about graduate school opportunities.
● Help create and run events that build a sense of community and belonging for graduate
students.
● Participate in mentor training workshops, as directed.
● Become content expert about graduate school application processes and financing
graduate school.
● Become content expert in CSUMB graduate program offerings.
● Become content expert in CSUMB policies involving graduate students.
● Become content expert in issues around “student life” for graduate students.
● Peer mentor graduate students who seek information or guidance.
● Mentor undergraduate students seeking a pathway to graduate school.
● Develop newsletter and marketing information, including web and social media-based content.
● Collaborate with various campus departments.
● Other duties as assigned
Commitment: Working up to 20 hours a week during spring semester of the 2026
academic semester.
Position Details:
Pay Rate: Up to $20 hour (depending upon experience and qualifications)
Hours/week: Up to 20 hours/week during the semester (flexible work times)
Hiring date: January 19, 2026
Position end: May 29, 2026 (may be extended if funding is available)
Preferred Qualifications:
● Student in good standing (required)
● Excellent written, oral communication & public interaction skills
● Knowledgeable of CSUMB campus resources
● Skillful in Google Apps (Calendar, Drive, Forms)
● Skillful in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
● Professionalism
● Independent worker
● Problem solving skills
● Ability to work in groups
● Public speaking skills
● Social media skills
