Girls Group is a local nonprofit mentoring agency based out of Ann Arbor, Ml, with a vision to end generational poverty by helping economically disadvantaged young women achieve self-sufficiency. The ultimate ambition is that each young woman finds their voice, defines their goals and dreams, and moves forward in the world with pride and self-confidence. Services establish long-term and supportive mentoring relationships, which span middle school, high school, and continue through a young woman's college and career journey.

Rollins College Summer Intern Position Summary

A Girls Group lntern's role is to establish and maintain positive relationships with middle-school & high school-aged participants (Ages 11-17) to help them find their voice, define their goals and dreams, and move forward in the world with pride and self-confidence. The Intern will work collaboratively with a team of programming staff and interns, families, and community partners to establish a vibrant community of support for participants. This position is primarily responsible for:

  • Co-facilitating weekly summer enrichment programming sessions
  • Establish developmental mentoring relationships with participants
  • Support agency-wide special events
  • Support agency leadership with special projects or initiatives

 

This internship position will offer an immersive community-engaged learning experience focused on positive youth development from the position of a Mentor. The Intern will be part of a collaborative, vibrant, and diverse team of 15+ college students and young professionals (Other Mentors). Summer programming often includes field trips, college and career tours, youth-led projects, and community partnerships on a variety of topics (e.g., adventure therapy, activism through art, mindfulness hikes, water park/lake trips, movie days, attending community festivals). The Intern will have the opportunity to build professional skills in youth programming, interpersonal practice skills, facilitation, public speaking, advocacy, PODS (privilege, oppression, diversity, and social justice), crisis response, data collection, program evaluation, curriculum development, and nonprofit work.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Provide Peer Mentoring At All Assigned Girls Group Programs
    • Co-facilitate group sessions for assigned programs utilizing Girls Group program standards and curriculum
    • Provide mentoring support to participants in alignment with the Girls Group standards during group sessions
    • Support an effective environment by providing structure and clear expectations, reinforce positive group dynamics, and create youth leadership opportunities during group sessions
    • Provide case management support to identified participants in alignment with the GirlsGroup standards, including assessment, person-centered planning, referrals, crisis response, and advocacy
    • Coordinate program meals, purchasing and organization of activity supplies, and transportation support to Girls Group programs and special events.
    • Participate in planning, set-up, and coordination of agency-wide special events

 

  • Administrative Duties
    • Adhere to programming procedures, including tracking and submitting mileage reports
    • Actively participate in team meetings before and after program sessions
    • Actively participate in weekly agency meetings, training, and supervision
    • Outreach communications, emails, text messaging, phone calls, and paperwork
    • Support agency leadership with research, editing, data entry, evaluation, and special projects

 

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience working with youth -middle-school and high school students- preferably in a mentoring capacity
  • Experience working with minority and diverse populations
  • Knowledge of child development, social justice, and/or youth programming
  • Comfortable with facilitating activities in a large group
  • Able to provide support for participants who may be experiencing crisis
  • Responsible, organized, and excellent communication skills
  • Maturity, patience, empathy and strong sense of self
  • Demonstrate and model professionalism in demeanor, dress, and communication as a role model to peers and youth
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace (Google Meet, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Calendar)

  • Track and submit all expenses and mileage

 

Internship Logistics

  • Internship Length: 12 week internship May-August (Specific dates based on candidate availability) Ideal dates would be
  • May 18th through August 7th.
  • Work Schedule: Full-time (30-40 hours) work during regular business hours Monday-Friday
    • There may occasionally be some evening and weekend assignments, but those are limited and the intern will be given advance notice
  • Work Location: Primarily in-person work environment while supporting participant programming/agency meetings and the opportunity to work remotely for administrative tasks
  • Example of weekly assignments:
    • Monday: 9-10am admin, 10am-4pm group programming, 4pm-5pm admin
    • Tuesday: 9-10am admin, 10am-4pm group programming, 4pm-5pm admin
    • Wednesday: 9am-12pm admin, 12pm-2pm agency meetings and supervision, 2pm-5pm admin
    • Thursday: 9am-5pm group programming
    • Friday: 9-10am admin, 10am-4pm group programming, 4pm-5pm admin

 

 

● Supervision: The intern will report to the Social Work Manager, Quania Branch, and meet bi-weekly for individual supervision to discuss intern learning and goals, professional skills, progress on tasks/assignments, and provide feedback.
● Compensation: The intern will receive a stipend of $13,850.00 (minus housing expenses), which should be used for time on the job (compensation), necessary travel, living expenses, food and groceries, outings, and academic credit internship costs.
● Housing: Suitable housing is identified before the intern arrives, typically subleasing an apartment, on-campus housing, or local Airbnb that will be leased by the intern. The intern will need to work with Girls' Group and the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement to secure housing. More than likely, the intern will have shared housing with another intern in the Ann Arbor community participating in the RNR Internship Program through Rollins College. Housing expenses are allocated at up to $7,200 and will be directly paid from Rollins to housing accommodations (housing expenses are deducted from the total compensation $13,850.00).
● Transportation: A personal vehicle is required for this internship in order to provide transportation daily to participants to and from programming. Girls Group provides reimbursement for miles driven at $.655 per mile when transporting participants to and from Girls Group activities
● Credits: The intern must participate in the Rollins College academic internship program and will receive four-course credits for participating in this internship experience
 

 

Internship Requirements

  • Must be a Rollins College undergraduate student with an anticipated graduation date of December 2026 or later
  • Possess a valid driver's license, with no restrictions as to when and where the employee may drive
  • Access to a reliable personal vehicle used to transport participants to and from programming daily (proof of vehicle registration required)
  • Provide proof of vehicle insurance, coverage of $100,000 for bodily injury and $100,000 for property damage
  • Pass a background check

 

The intern is also REQUIRED to participate in the Rollins College academic internship program, and they will receive 4 credits as a part of this experience. The stipend above should also be utilizedto cover the $500 internship course fee. Thus, the intern will receivethe remaining  total after the costs above (housing, internship, travel expenses) are dispersed on a bi-weekly basis, evenly distributed over the length of the internship. The selected candidate must register for the academic internship course before April 6, 2026, through the Center for Career &Life Planning. All RNR internswill also be required to participate in
