Research Intern Summer 2026

Research interns write advocacy-oriented research materials exploring the impact of government surveillance technologies on civil rights and racial justice. Research interns also contribute research toward S.T.O.P.’s op-eds and conference proposals.

Qualifications:

  • Stellar writing skills and the ability to make highly technical topics clear and engaging to a broad audience.
  • Research experience in an area related to S.T.O.P.’s work. Preference given to candidates experienced with surveillance technology, government use of technology, online privacy, or a closely related area (please explain).
  • Current or recent undergraduate/graduate student.
  • Comfort with Microsoft Office, Outlook, and other productivity tools.
  • Clear passion for civil rights and privacy.
  • Preferred (not required): minimum availability of 10 hours a week. Full-time placements are always available.

S.T.O.P. is based out of New York City, and while our internships can function 100% remotely, staff and interns in NYC can take advantage of co-working meetups, advocacy and action events, as well as other in-person opportunities.

Currently, internship positions are unpaid and available for outside funding and college credit only. We are currently working towards a paid internship program for the future.
