MEDICAL PRACTICE OPERATIONS INTERNSHIP

THE OPPORTUNITY
Gain hands-on experience in medical practice operations, workflow optimization, and healthcare systems management. This internship offers real-world exposure to the business side of healthcare across two established primary care practices. You'll work directly with the COO/Director of Operations to design, build, and implement operational systems that improve patient care delivery, revenue cycle performance, and clinical efficiency.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN & BUILD

Clinical Workflow Design

• Map patient flow from check-in to check-out 

• Identify bottlenecks in clinical processes 

• Design efficiency improvements 

• Create visual workflow documentation 

• Build SOPs for clinical and administrative teams
 

EHR Systems & Customization
• Master eClinicalWorks configuration 

• Design Registry methodologies for population health 

• Build clinical documentation templates 

• Create automated alerts and task workflows 

• Optimize CPT coding integration


Revenue Cycle Management
• Analyze billing performance and denial patterns 

• Build payer contract analysis frameworks 

• Design insurance verification workflows 

• Create prior authorization tracking systems 

• Develop KPI dashboards for financial metrics


Healthcare Compliance & Quality
• Navigate Medicare/Medicaid requirements 

• Build compliance documentation for value-based programs (RPM, CCM, AWV) 

• Design audit-ready record systems 

• Implement CMS coding updates 

• Quality measure tracking
 

Process Automation & Integration
• Connect systems (Google Workspace, EHR, practice management)

• Build automated reporting pipelines 

• Design notification and task workflows 

• Create low-cost/no-cost automation solutions 

• Develop creative tech solutions


Staff Training & Documentation
• Design training curricula for clinical and administrative staff 

• Create comprehensive SOP libraries 

• Build quick-reference guides 

• Develop competency assessment tools 

• Design scalable onboarding programs


Data Analysis & Performance Metrics
• Build practice performance dashboards 

• Analyze patient volume and scheduling efficiency 

• Track provider productivity metrics 

• Identify revenue optimization opportunities 

• Present data-driven recommendations

COMPENSATION & STRUCTURE
Stipend: Competitive weekly stipend (amount TBD based on experience and qualifications)
Hours: 25-30 hours per week
Work Model: Hybrid only (combination of remote work and in-person meetings at practice locations in Lithonia and Austell)
Duration: One semester minimum (Fall, Spring, or Summer terms), with potential for extension
