GIS Technician Intern
City Utilities of Springfield is looking for a GIS Intern to support our GIS team through a variety of mapping, data management, and technical projects. This is a great opportunity for students interested in gaining hands-on experience working with geographic information systems, utility mapping, and spatial data management in a collaborative and mission-driven environment.
We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented, eager to learn, curious about technology and mapping systems, and excited to contribute to meaningful projects that support our community.
What You’ll Do
Under the direction of the GIS Analyst II or designee, the intern will assist with day-to-day GIS production work and special projects. Responsibilities may include:
- Assisting with storing, manipulating, documenting, distributing, and displaying geographically referenced information using GIS software and related applications
- Reviewing maps, service cards, utility as-builts, spreadsheets, scanned images, and other documentation
- Maintaining and updating spatial data and attributes
- Performing quality assurance checks and following established standards and procedures
- Running data processing procedures and software tools
- Analyzing data, documenting findings, and communicating observations to the team
- Supporting other related GIS and technical duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Currently working toward a degree in Geospatial Sciences, Geography, Geology, Community & Regional/Urban Planning, or a related field from an accredited institution
- Experience with Esri ArcGIS tools is strongly preferred
- Autodesk AutoCAD experience is preferred
Internship Requirements
Our internships are paid positions intended for students who:
- Have completed at least one year of college
- Are enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program
- Maintain at least 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate studies or 6 credit hours for graduate studies
Interns typically work:
- 20-25 hours per week during the school year
- Up to 40 hours per week during the summer
- No more than 1,500 hours in a calendar year
Internship employment concludes within three months following graduation.
