Internship - ACE EPIC BLM OR: Range Monitoring

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management in Prineville, Oregon, is seeking two Range Technicians for 30 weeks to assist BLM field offices in support of the rangeland management program including monitoring vegetation and upland trend assessments. This opportunity is intended for enthusiastic professionals with a background in Rangeland Management or a closely related field, with a deep interest in jointly advancing their career goals and the stewardship of Oregon's natural resources through purposeful fieldwork and research.

Start Date: 4/2019 or 5/2019
End Date: 10/2019 or 11/2019 (Dependent on start date)

Location: Prineville BLM District Office- Prineville, Oregon

Compensation: $480 per week living allowance (stipend) to cover Housing, Food, and incidentals. Typical workweek will be 8-10 hours/day, 4-5 days/week. The job will primarily be a field work position. However, there will be office time for good data management with forms and photos.
Not Provided: Housing is not provided. Intern will be responsible for obtaining their own housing.

Project Background and Objectives: The intern will aid in the collection of data in range studies to include short and long term range trend data, vegetation condition, vegetation utilization, as well as inventory and assessment of the conditions of existing range improvements/infrastructure on BLM managed lands within the Prineville District. Data collected will contribute directly to the range program support in Rangeland Health Assessments and grazing permit renewals. Increased data collections and analysis help inform decisions regarding the health of BLM managed lands within the Prineville District. This data collection facilitates the coordination with livestock grazing permittees and other interested publics. This internship provides opportunity to see how land management principles are applied while balancing a multiple use agency direction.

Position Description: The position provides technical support and assistance in range conservation, range management, and range improvement. The incumbent may perform any or all of the following, or similar duties: As specifically instructed by the supervisor, the incumbent collects and records data in range studies such as condition and trend, reasons for use, utilization, actual use, and climatological data. Serves as a team member for range inventory efforts. This includes duties such as mapping and entails collecting, compiling, and recording vegetation data on each site write-up area (SWA). Provides assistance in identifying needed improvement projects (wells, reservoirs, fences, vegetation projects, etc.) and inspecting/inventorying condition of existing projects. Observes, records, and reports to the supervisor any signs of unauthorized grazing use. Checks on placement of salt and water according to allotment management plans.
 
Trainings Provided (Subject to Change): UTV, Trailer Training, First Aid, CPR, Defensive Driving, BLM specific range monitoring techniques, diversity, ethics, and other required training.

Qualifications: Applicants should have degree in Rangeland Management, or related field. Candidates with Master's Degrees and an interest in a career in public lands management are strongly encouraged to apply. Resumes and cover letters must show detailed key project experiences. 

Required:
  • Interns must be US citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Must be 21 - 30 years of age. Applicants 31-35, with recent Masters Degree or pursuing Masters degree up to age 35, will be considered.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check is required
  • Must have a valid driver's license, clean driving record with ability to provide required documentation; (Driving record checks will be completed during on-boarding process. (Interns must be 21+ to drive ACE/Agency vehicles)
  • Interns must have a high a high fitness level and an interest in camping, with potential for backcountry work trips.
  • Ability to work alone/in a small group with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work in small teams in close/remote settings (teams of 2-3).
  • Database management and ArcGIS software experience
  • Must be able to take initiative, work independently, and participate in collaborative efforts
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely with resource professional
  • Must have plant identification skills, specifically grasses and forbs
  • Must be comfortable communicating with the public or permittees, and be skilled at difficult conversations, or be willing to learn these skills.
  • Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions - heat during the summer and colder temperatures in the spring and fall.

Preferred Skills:
  • Undergraduate degree in Rangeland Management or a natural resource related field.
  • Plant identification skills
  • GPS, Map, and Compass skills
  • Computer programs particularly Microsoft Office
  • Strong communication skills both orally and written
  • Ability to drive large, 4x4 vehicles in rough terrain
  • Knowledge of upland monitoring trend techniques, such as photos points, Line Point Intercept, and Daubenmire,
  • Ambition and good at documenting notes in the field
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with, the local area is also helpful.
  • A positive attitude
