Mount Agamenticus Conservation Program, York Parks & Recreation Department Job: Mt. Agamenticus Trails, Grounds, Facilities Supervisor

Location: The Mount Agamenticus Region, York County, Maine

Summary of Position: The Mount Agamenticus management area, located in coastal Southern Maine, supports a diverse, undeveloped coastal forest containing the highest concentration of vernal pools in Maine, rare plant and animal species, and unique recreational opportunities. The Supervisor is responsible for stewardship activities within the management area which includes public access points, a summit park with exceptional views, and a network of 40 miles of trail within 4,400 acres of protected lands.

The Supervisor provides year round oversight and maintenance of all recreational trails, park grounds, summit shrubland and supporting facilities in the Mount Agamenticus management area. This position also: coordinates and directs the seasonal trail crew and year-round volunteer participants on all trail and park projects; plans, develops and executes annual maintenance agendas and coordinates work with on-going projects and new initiatives; and provides continuous review and assessment to the Conservation Coordinator for long term regional planning.

Duties:
  • Maintain all trails, park grounds, and supporting facilities to specified standards for outdoor recreational use.
  • Oversee all volunteer and outside help parties; to include planning activities, providing leadership, and follow-up coordination.
  • Implement operational trail and shrubland management plans for long term and seasonal work, providing precise direction through planning documents for execution during the “field” season.
  • Assess all grounds and facilities; prepare an annual review with maintenance and material requirements.
  • Coordinate with outside agencies (boy scouts, corporations, school groups, etc.) to organize and complete combined workdays and work projects.
  • Provide coordination and on-site assistance for all group functions in the management area.
  • Maintain all outreach displays and assist with outreach events and programs.
  • Provide customer service to visitors, promote environmental awareness and seek compliance of rules and regulations.
  • Perform basic building maintenance; painting, sanitation, small repairs.
  • Build advanced trail structures; bridges, water diversions, bench cuts, crib walls, etc.
  • Provide immediate assistance for storm recovery operations; clearing trees, debris removal, trail closures and emergency information.

Skills/Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to foster teamwork.
  • Organization and communication skills for planning and outreach work.
  • Multi-task projects and small teams.
  • Must be results orientated.
  • Ability to improvise with challenging and changing conditions.
  • Knowledgeable in trail building and environmental protection.
  • Moderate physical effort required involving long periods of standing/walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, occasional lifting of moderately heavy objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to operate telephone, computer, basic construction and trail maintenance tools.
  • Vision and hearing adequate to perform the essential function of the job are required.
  • Capability to operate maintenance and snowplowing equipment.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in various types of weather conditions and temperatures.
  • Capable of working a planned schedule that will include long hours and weekends.

Annual Schedule and Compensation: The Trails, Grounds, Facilities Supervisor will be expected to work an average of less than 30 hours per week over the course of a year, with increased hours May through mid-October and significantly reduced hours December through February. This position is not eligible for benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience.
