Conservation Practitioner I

The Conservation Practitioner I performs and participates in preserve restoration practices and maintenance. This position will be stationed at Pontotoc Ridge Preserve near Stonewall, Oklahoma. This is a grant-funded, part-time position (20-25 hours per week) lasting through October 2022. Housing is not provided.

·       Removes exotic species and monitors treatments areas using GPS technology

·       Maintains and operates tools, equipment, and vehicles with training in a safe manner while taking appropriate care of equipment (e.g. lawn mower, tractor, two-way radio, fire management equipment, ATV, UTV etc.)

·       Maintains facilities and grounds

·       Identify and map invasive species

·       Assists with forest, woodland, prairie and savanna stewardship practices and management

·       May interact with visitors, volunteers, and landowners

·       Work independently and under minimal supervision at times

·       May work in variable weather conditions for long periods of time, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.               

·       Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.                           

·       High school diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience             

·       Experience maintaining and operating various types of equipment and vehicles in a safe and efficient manner. Equipment includes lawn mower, UTV, ATV, two-way radio, tractors, trailers, brush hog, or similar equipment.

·       Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR, herbicide or pesticide application).

·       Valid drivers license

·       Must be 18 years of age

·       Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.

·       Ability to follow instructions from colleagues/coworkers/team members.

·       Ability to obtain a driver’s license, and maintain a good driving record.

·       Ability to work in a team environment.

·       Knowledge of native plants and animals a plus.

·       Knowledge of invasive species and treatment options desirable

·       Ability to serve in remote areas at times with limited communications

·       Ability to navigate and read maps

·       Willingness to complete RXCM or FFT2 wildland firefighting training under NWCG
