PTS Rec. Summer Leader I - Youth Programming

Description/Duties & Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is currently recruiting staff to work youth programming at a variety of locations. The position requires staff to facilitate various activities with children, including sports, games, crafts, and more.

Recreation Leader I – $14.42-15.30 per hour
Under the leadership of the Recreation or Community Services Coordinator and Program Specialists, this position will work directly with youth programming.

Camp Clarita - This position will work with youth, ages 5-12, and may work up to 40 hours per week from hire date through August 6, 2021 and is based on the needs of the program; Monday – Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

Newhall Community Center - This position will work directly with youth and teens, ages 5 to 17, in the summer program. This position may work up to 40 hours per week from hire date to August 13, Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m.– 7:00 p.m. and is based on the needs of the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Works directly with the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, and Specialists, to facilitate programs for youth
• Assists in supervising and leading children; maintains staff/child ratio
• Supervises and leads youth and teens in activities such as arts & crafts, games, sports, water activities, and more
• Addresses behavior concerns with campers when necessary
• Communicate and collaborate with other City divisions/departments
• Tracks program participation
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and materials throughout the program
• Assists in organization, set-up, and clean-up of facility
• Organizes and prepares activities for children
• Greets patrons and participants and answers inquiries regarding programs
• Effectively addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arise
• Maintains various forms, logs, and reports
• Attends meetings and training sessions
• Follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
• May swim with campers on a daily basis
• Adheres to Los Angeles Department of Public Health guidelines set forth
• Performs first aid and responds to emergencies; reports incidents and accidents
• Other duties, as directed by Recreation Supervisor, Coordinator, and/or Specialists

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or GED equivalent by June 2021
• Six months of experience in youth and teens in a recreation, education, child care program, after-school program, camps or other relatable setting
• Completion of college courses is highly desirable
• Bilingual in English/Spanish highly desirable
• Possession of, or ability to obtain Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid within one month of hire

• Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more is required
occasionally

Final candidates for the position of Recreation Leader will require a negative TB test result within the last two years to be cleared to work. This clearance must be completed prior to the first day of work. It is important to note that current CDC guidelines do not allow for a TB test to be given within 28 days of receiving the first or second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
All offers of employment with the City of Santa Clarita are made contingent upon receipt of proof of legal right to work in the United States and successful completion of a post-offer pre-employment physical which may include a drug screen and Physical Abilities Test, negative TB test on file, and Department of Justice fingerprinting. Criminal offender information will be reviewed on an ongoing basis. The City uses the E-Verify program to electronically confirm work authorization of newly hired employees.

In compliance with the California law, positions working with children are required to be mandated child abuse reporters. A mandated reporter is an individual who is obligated by law to report suspected cases of child abuse and neglect.

As a City of Santa Clarita public employee, you may be called upon to work as a Disaster Service Worker (DSW) in the event of an emergency (in accordance with Government Code §§ 3100-3109). Before entering upon the duties of employment, all public employees, except those excluded by law, take and subscribe to an oath or affirmation set forth in the California Constitution, declaring them to be Disaster Service Workers in time of need.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours.
