This is a Student Internship position under the Pathways Internship Program.

To qualify for this Internship, you MUST be a continuing student enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the current/upcoming semesters for the duration of the internship as a condition of employment, taking at least a half-time course load. You will be required to provide documentation to support eligibility. Students may be employed throughout the academic year.

This is a developmental position within FHWA's Alabama Federal-aid Highway Division. The position is designed to provide interns with challenging assignments that will broaden their perspectives on issues facing the government and prepare them for future positions throughout the government.

The Environmental Protection Specialist Pathways Student Intern will be exposed to and assist in the regular day to day activities of the assigned discipline found in the FHWA Alabama Division Office. The intern will work directly under and be mentored by the Alabama Division Office's Environmental Engineer. The position offers opportunity for travel to visit various project sites.

You will manage the environmental files and prepare and update status of close-out report for Alabama Division federal-aid projects with a non-Programmatic Categorical Exclusion (PCE) environmental document. This work will require a review of information under multiple project numbers available on the Alabama Department of Transportation’s (ALDOT’s) Comprehensive Project Management System (CPMS); FHWA’s Fiscal Management Information System (FMIS); electronic mapping systems and reading sections of environmental documents.

Additional work will involve:

  • Reviewing of various environmental documents
  • Attending various types of project meetings with ALDOT, consultants, resource agencies and/ or local government representatives
  • Assisting with program reviews
  • Participating and assisting with various division personnel and activities

The ideal candidate is a student dedicated to public service, interested in Transportation, and working as a part of the Executive Branch.

The ideal candidate possesses Microsoft Office knowledge; Customer Service experience; is inquisitive & has a positive attitude; is eager to learn and understand federal policy & guidance; and has an innovative mindset.

For this position you should either have interest or experience in natural and human environmental issues and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
