Come join the State Parks team as a Park Interpretive Specialist (seasonal) in the beautiful Oceano Dunes District. The reporting location for this position is the Oceano Dunes District Visitor Center, 555 Pier Ave, Oceano, CA 93445.
This position will work under the supervision of State Park Interpreter III. This position will plan, organize, and conduct Junior Ranger and Campfire programs; educational and school presentations in both classroom and park settings; structured interpretive and educational walks and tours; visitor center operations; and informal roving field interpretive and educational presentations using techniques, strategies and standards used within department and the profession. A Department and district approved uniform is required to be worn during work hours. Work hours will vary and may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Applicants should have the following qualities: Ability to stand for prolonged periods; work under varied weather conditions; effectively communicate with visitors and other park staff; operate a computer and have basic understanding of Zoom or other video communication platforms; willingness to learn how to operate an off-highway vehicle; desire to learn about the natural, cultural and recreational history of Pismo State Beach and Oceano Dunes SVRA and to share this knowledge with the general public

Occasional travel may be required.

- Using knowledge of the Natural, Cultural and Recreational Resources within the District, conduct interpretive activities for park visitors such as Oral presentation Multimedia presentations Hands on activities and craft projects for the Junior Ranger, school tours, and Campfire programs.
- Using knowledge of the Natural, Cultural and Recreational Resources within the District, provide meaningful and accurate interpretive information to park visitors and conduct interpretive activities such as Informal talks, answering questions and utilizing tangible items for educational opportunities in settings including Educational Walks and Talks, Roving Interpretation, Visitor Center and Education Stations.
- Work with general public and answer questions on rules, regulations, and facilities for the public and provides directions to the public, and promotes a positive relationship with park volunteers and the public through professional and friendly interactions.
- Equivalent to graduation from college (1) with major work in natural sciences or human history
OR
- Major work in education with specialization in natural science or human history. Full-time paid work performing duties similar to those listed under "TYPICAL TASKS" above may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required education on the basis of one season (three months) of experience being equal to one year of education.
OR
- Three years of experience in planning or implementing historical or natural resources interpretive programs involving extensive personal contact with groups and organizations. (Graduate work in interpretation, social sciences, natural sciences, communications, or closely related fields may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience.)
