Senior Park Aide (Seasonal)

Come join the State Parks team as a Senior Park Aide(seasonal) in the beautiful Oceano Dunes District. The reporting location for this position is the Oceano Dunes District Visitor Center, 555 Pier Ave, Oceano, CA 93445.

This position will work under the supervision of State Park Interpreter III. This position may assist with planning, organizing, and conducting Junior Ranger and Campfire programs; visitor center operations; educational and school presentations in both classroom and park settings; and informal roving field interpretive and educational presentations using techniques, strategies and standards used within department and the profession.  A Department and district approved uniform is required to be worn during work hours. Work hours will vary and may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Applicants should have the following qualities: Ability to stand for prolonged periods; work under varied weather conditions; effectively communicate with visitors and other park staff; operate a computer and have basic understanding of Zoom or other video communication platforms; willingness to learn how to operate an off-highway vehicle; desire to learn about the natural, cultural and recreational history of Pismo State Beach and Oceano Dunes SVRA and to share this knowledge with the general public

This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

Duties: 

  • Conduct interpretive activities for park visitors such as Junior Ranger, school tours, and Campfire programs. 
  • Oral and multimedia presentations in a group setting. 
  • Administer hands on activities and craft projects for various interpretive programs.
  • Articulate the Natural, Cultural and Recreational Resources within the District.
  • Provide meaningful and accurate interpretive information to park visitors. 
  • Lead educational walk and talks. 
  • Answer questions and utilize tangible items for educational opportunities in settings including Roving Interpretation, Visitor Center and Education Stations. 

Qualifications:

  • One thousand hours of experience in park operations in a class equivalent in level of responsibility to the class of Park Aide (Seasonal).
  • When driving is a requirement of the job: Possession of a valid driver license of the appropriate class and a safe driving record as documented by the Department of Motor Vehicles within 60 days prior to appointment (A safe driving record is one free from convictions in the past two years for repeated moving violations or a single serious violation, such as drunk or reckless driving.) 
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.)

Or 

  • One year or 1,920 hours of experience in any one of the following: conducting educational programs, recreational programs, or conducting public service programs.
