JOB DESCRIPTION
Since 1929, the Boys & Girls Clubs of El Paso has helped young people build great futures as productive and responsible citizens. Today, our nine clubs serve nearly two thousand children annually through Club membership and community outreach. We work with students through activities that help them succeed in school and become leaders. Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their goals and we exist to make that dream a reality.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Youth Development Specialist (YDS) is responsible for planning, implementing, supervising, and providing high-quality and consistent education, social recreation, arts & crafts, sports & fitness and STEM programming for youth in a thriving environment. S/he plays an essential role in ensuring the safety of club members, as well as establishing positive social interactions and maintaining a positive environment to build high-quality relationships. Youth Development Specialists work collectively to assist club members with developing better physical and mental fitness, improving social and interpersonal skills, engaging in positive use of leisure time and improving school attendance and performance.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborates on programs, activities and opportunities that prepare youth for success and that create a club environment that facilitates achievement of youth development.
- Maintains daily contact with club members and provides guidance, mentoring and role modeling.
- Ensures a healthy and safe environment conducive to high-quality programming by ensuring facilities, equipment and supplies are maintained.
- Implements BGCA programs, services and activities to ensure that they meet the stated objectives, as well as the needs and interest of club member.
- Compiles regular reports reflecting all activities, attendance and participation.
- Supports data tracking related to daily activities and meeting grant requirements, when applicable.
- Attends all mandatory staff meetings and staff training regularly.
- Works with other staff and administrative personnel to carry out standard programs and special events.
- Runs scheduled large and small group activities at the scheduled times with a high level of excitement and order under the direct supervision of Unit Director.
- Other duties as assigned by the Unit Director.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Contributes to the successful execution of the organization’s mission by following the policies and procedures, professional standards, and communication requirements of staff members.
- Instills a sense of sponsorship, teamwork and fair play in club members, as well as amongst staff during programs and activities.
- Answers phones and welcomes visitors, maintaining positive relationships with school-day staff.
- Deals effectively with club members, including discipline problems using best practices.
- Drives youth in BGCEP vehicles when required or drive BGCEP vehicles to pick up donations.
- Serves meals to members.
- Supervises members on field trips, as needed.
- Tracks inventory of club materials for learning and recreation.
SKILLS/ KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- High school diploma or G.E.D
- Valid Driver’s License
- English/Spanish capabilities
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and written
- A minimum of one year of work experience with children and youth.
- Experience in planning and supervising activities based on development needs of young people or equivalent experience.
- Valid State Driver’s License
- CPR/ AED/ First-Aid Certification

Hand-eye coordination is necessary to perform certain duties. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet to moderate in office settings to moderate and usually loud in recreation and play settings when children are present.
