About Stimson
The Henry L. Stimson Center (Stimson), a nonpartisan global security think tank located in Washington, DC, seeks a part-time intern for our Global South In The World Order Project. Reporting to Aude Darnal, Research Analyst and Project Manager for the project, this role ensures that our practices support our mission-driven work, align with Stimson's vision, values, strategic goals, standards of conduct, and operational objectives, and demonstrate our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and employee well-being.

The Global South in the World Order Project at the Stimson Center seeks a highly motivated candidate to join the team as a part-time intern. The selected intern will support the Project in its efforts to 1) elevate geopolitical perspectives from Global South policy experts and further their representation in Western policy circles, especially in Washington; 2) strengthen South-South cooperation; and 3) build bridges between Southern and Western policy experts, to advance global governance reform and equity in international affairs, and foster sustainable prosperity and security for all.
One of the Global South in the World Order Project's primary objectives is to support representation in international policy. As such, the Project strongly encourages students from marginalized or underrepresented groups to apply.
Applicants should be sincere in their desire for an internship that will take place in a fast-paced and challenging environment.
This paid internship will run from the beginning of October to mid-December, 2024, with a minimum of 20 hours per week, and with the possibility to extend the internship to the Spring. The internship will follow the Stimson Center's hybrid work policy, which includes being in the office in Washington at least one day per week.
Primary Responsibilities
The intern's responsibilities will focus on project administration and research support:
- Research and writing:
- Conduct research and help draft the Project's publications.
- Draft correspondence and take notes at the Project's meetings and events.
- Draft high quality activity summaries that include realistic policy recommendations.
- Copy/edit and proofread the Project's written materials.
- Administration
- Provide logistical and operational support for the Project's activities.
- Coordinate communications with the Project's network.
- Support media outreach to promote the Project's publications and events.
- Manage the Project's contacts and support institutional memory.
- Support the development of the Project, as needed, by taking part in internal discussions and by sharing innovative ideas.
- A successful candidate should be proactive and comfortable sharing ideas to advance the Project's objectives.
Qualifications
- Must demonstrate proven interest and knowledge in the core mission, topics, and priorities of the Global South in the World Order Project.
- Must be knowledgeable about the US foreign policy and engagement strategy with Global South countries, notably with regard to the reform of global governance institutions, climate and development financing, aid, and trade and investment.
- Must be knowledgeable about current dynamics across the Global South to advance equity in international affairs.
- Must be attentive to detail and possess excellent writing and editing skills, especially to support the Project's leader, who is a non-native Anglophone speaker.
- Must be proficient with Microsoft Office, especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (use of formulas, creation and update of semi-complex tables). Proficiency in additional tools such as Canva, Photoshop, and DataWrapper is highly desired.
Eligibility
- Must be a current graduate student or someone who has recently finished a masters program, with a strong interest in international policy, and especially the reform of the international financial architecture, climate and development financing, critical minerals, and other issues related to equity in international affairs.
- GPA of 3.0/4.0 preferred (or equivalent from a non-U.S. institution).
- Only students legally allowed to work in the United States will be considered.
- Please note that no exception can be made, and candidacies that do not meet this criterion will be automatically rejected.
- The intern will need to be residing in the DMV area for the period of the internship.
Professional Development
- Interns can expect close and constant interaction with program staff, including their supervisor.
- The interns will also have access to the project's network by participating in the different project activities.
- The intern's supervisor will evaluate the intern's performance at the close of the internship.
- The intern will also be encouraged to evaluate the internship program at Stimson and their individual experience.
- Recently, our interns have gone on to other jobs in the State Department, the Department of Defense, the United Nations, various think tanks, and other organizations. Others have chosen to continue their education at graduate programs, including at Georgetown and SAIS.
