Direct Support Technician
The purpose of the Direct Support Technician (DST) is to perform routine paraprofessional duties by providing assistance, support, and training to adult individuals with intellectual disabilities, and/or physical and /or sensory impairments.
- Direct Support Technicians are responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of the individuals served by assisting them in self-care, communication, mobility, and personal living skills.
- Connecting and integrating clients within the community by accessing a variety of community resources and opportunities for socialization and recreation.
- Direct Support Technicians implement various training programs in the areas of communication, self-care, independent living, self-management, and socialization/recreation.
- Access community resources, such as community centers, volunteer opportunities, parks, malls, restaurants, museums, etc.
- Provide assistance to residents with their personal care and hygiene, as well as meal preparation and assistance with eating/drinking as needed. Perform a variety of tasks involving cleanliness and maintenance of a safe and healthy living environment. This involves the ability to use a Hoyer Lift.
- Completing progress/case notes, daily log, and other program or agency forms as needed
- Performs other related tasks as required
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
Requires high school diploma or GED and any combination of education and experience equivalent to the satisfactory completion of one year of college education in client health/mental health care, developmental psychology, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Requires a minimum of six months of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
- Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards.
- Must obtain CPR and First Aid certifications within 90 days.
- Employees serving the Intellectual Disabilities (ID) population must pass ID Orientation Workbook training within thirty days of hire.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
