The atmosphere was great. Really encouraging and large internship group outings.

No cubicles and more collaboration.

Find a good team. The company has great team's and horrible teams.

Mechanical Engineering Intern

What I liked

Rockwell Collins has a very flexible work environment. The managers and staff are all very friendly and understanding. They even allowed me to take days off to travel. I had a very good learning experience since the internship exposed me to different aspects of engineering: Design, Analysis, and Testing.

What I wish was different

Due to the difficult nature of finding a place to live, they can provide more housing assistance to make staying there cheaper and easier.

Advice

To preform well in the internship, it requires a lot of self discipline. Since there is nobody to help you learn a lot of the new material, everything is self-taught. The other engineers, your mentor, and your supervisor are there to help you, but they expect you to learn most of the material by yourself.

The choice in location.

The environment is very similar to Rose in that it was an "open-door policy" atmosphere and it was very welcoming.

Manufacturing and Production Engineer / Vibration Test Engineer

What I liked

Was able to see the entire process from a contract coming into the facility to the final product shipping to the customer. Was able to be hands on with the units, helping technicians build them. I was able to work in environmental testing. I was able to be a Lead ME for a program, which gave great experience as an engineer and helped me make a lot of connections.

What I wish was different

The manufacturing position was electro-manufacturing, which was different from what I was expecting. Work was slow for the first few months and I didn't feel like I had meaningful work. It wasn't until I became a Lead ME and doing environmental testing that I enjoyed my time. Unfortunately I was not able to apply much mechanical engineering knowledge to my work or learn any new software.

Advice

Make the most of the opportunities given. Show up early, work hard, ask for more work, ask to work on different projects, and be social with your colleagues. Once you learn the ins and outs of your job, you can make the most of your co-op.

The internship experience is incredibly valuable - interns have the opportunity to work directly on projects side by side with Lead Engineers.

What I wish was different

The internship program does not have a job placement program for graduating interns.

Ask questions and take initiative. There is always work to be done and learning opportunities.

Manufacturing Engineering Co-op

What I liked

Opportunity to explore departments within the building, availability for co-ops to obtain meaningful and challenging work, and frequency of company/co-op social events.

What I wish was different

I would have wished to see company sponsored trips to sister locations in Hartford and Windsor Locks, CT.

Advice

Be ambitious; if you are willing to go out of your way to find work in other departments, other employees are usually more than willing to help you. This is a perfect way to find out more about each of the departments and how they intertwine.

What I liked

Great team environment, able to work on a variety of projects that were different than what I was exposed to.

What I wish was different

Having more upfront set - up when I arrived (e.g. system access, passwords).

Advice

Do not be afraid to fail and ask questions. As an intern you of course should provide quality work but you should also not be afraid to take on new projects that you are not familiar with. At the end of the day, it is your career. Figure out what you enjoy.
