Manufacturing Engineering Intern

May 2019 • Windsor Locks, CT

What I liked

I like the people. I like how they encourage interns to ask as many questions and to spend time with employees who are doing the job function that interests them. They push you to keep learning. I liked the hardware I get to work on and it’s very easy to bring things up to my managers or people higher up than me. I like how most people at the company don’t look down on me for being an intern. They really seem to value having me there and my input. I

What I wish was different

I wish I had been more assertive at the beginning so I could have started learning and doing more tasks earlier. It took some time to gain the confidence to keep asking for more work or to have things explained to me. The job was so new to me so it was overwhelming and I was worried I would be seen as stupid or incompetent at first but I realized that I’m not supposed to know how to do everything and that helped. I wish I had participated in more of the events they had for the younger people. But I get so nervous going places by myself that I just wouldn’t go to them. Sometimes I wish I had been able to get to know the other interns more. My desk wasn’t near any of them so I never really got to see them or talk to them much.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask a million questions. Be curious! This is a learning experience for you. Everyday you should try and learn something new about your job or the business. This is a great opportunity to expand your network so reach out to employees who’s jobs interest you, ask them to get lunch or something similar so you can pick their brain. Meet with managers and get their advice. People will love having the chance to help someone new and young and just starting their career. Some businesses will have an intern mentorship program. Get up in that!! Get a mentor and bug them like crazy. They most likely chose to sign up to be a mentor so they know what they’re getting into. They want you to ask them questions, they want to help you, and they want to be a resource for you. That’s what they’re there for. Mentors can be anyone and can come unexpectedly too. I met one of my mentors while volunteering with Collins. Try and stay active in the company if you like working there. This may give you a higher chance of them asking you to come back. I get A LOT of anxiety at all the things I mentioned above: putting myself out there, reaching out to strangers, asking lots of questions in the fear I’ll come off as annoying or pushy. But I had to keep reminding myself that it’s okay to do all that stuff, it’s almost expected for someone in the position of an intern. People will like that you show interest and initiative. And, yes, there may be times where you crash and burn. Maybe someone doesn’t have the time to answer your questions or get lunch or seems annoyed, but you just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and try again! It will be okay and it will help so much in figuring out what you would actually want to do after you graduate. If theres a time where you feel like you don’t have a lot of work on your plate or you’re bored, don’t just sit there and wait for someone to give you work. Go ask for something to do. Constantly ask your coworkers if there’s anything you can help them with. Or are there tasks you can do to help alleviate their workload. Sometimes this may get you doing something boring (They know it’s boring but it’s probably something that needs to get done regardless and they will appreciate that you did it for them), but it will get brownie points in the end. It’s also really good to use this time to figure out what you definitely DON’T want to do with your career and that’s what can be so fantastic about internships. Most places encourage you to shadow other roles and learn about the different paths you can take. Take advantage of that. And one last thing, SPEAK UP. If you come into your new role and realize it isn’t for you, say something!! Most managers will not take it personally if you realize you don’t like what they have you doing. For example: you applied to be a project engineer and after doing it for some time don’t enjoy it, speak up! At Collins they encourage interns to speak with HR and their managers if they aren’t enjoying what they do so they can see about getting them into a role they will like. HR will tell you on the first day they want to make sure you get the most out of this experience so go to them if you feel like you’re not being challenged or your not enjoying what you do.

Marketing Analyst Intern

May - December 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

I liked that I was able to learn a lot and get a ton of experience in my future field. I was giving a lot of responsibility and my direct supervisor was awesome.

What I wish was different

The first leg of the internship (May-Aug) my supervisor liked to micromanage and she questioned a lot of what I was doing requiring me to report out on my work once a week but couldn't offer much help, which felt unnecessary. The second leg of the internship was hard because I switched roles and had no knowledge about the new business unit. I received very little training and they really needed someone full time and I was unable to work full time because I was taking classes.

Advice

Management is frustrating and they expect a lot of you or do not expect enough. Some managers are not very understanding of what you need and are very resistant to change. Finding support in leadership in other places is good and will help you grow in the company.

What I liked

Got to work on actual projects and everyone at Collins is happy to answer your questions. A really great community.

What I wish was different

Many projects were understandably put on hold, meaning there was less for the interns to work on or shadow.

Advice

Talk to everyone you can, you start to build a network and learn so much from people who have been in the field for years.

Software Engineer Intern

June - August 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

The experience I had at the company was amazing. I participated on a team of interns in an R&D setting working on an AI project. It's fast-paced, mission-driven, and overall very fulfilling and impactful work. Our manager and mentor were great, the pay was very competitive, and housing was provided.

What I wish was different

The location was a bit of a shell-shock for me. Iowa is vastly different from Houston or Milwaukee, places I'm accustomed to. I didn't have any family in the area, though that may not be a concern for everyone. Cedar Rapids itself is a great city, albeit small.

Advice

Participate in the special intern events when you can. The StartUp Weekend in particular is a great experience that you won't want to miss.

Digital Technology Project Management Intern

June 2020 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

Since the internship was 100% remote, Collins Aerospace did a really great job of providing me with resources that would help me stay connected with my teammates, as well as other interns around the country. The hours of the internship were great, and it was fun to learn a variety of IT programs that were new to me.

What I wish was different

Sometimes the work was not super exciting. However, the unexciting work was also balanced out with meetings that were interesting, as well as other more interesting tasks. I also wish the internship could have been in person, but that's obviously out of everyone's control.

Advice

During your internship, reach out to people on your team and adjacent teams to learn about what they do and how they got there. Each person has a unique story, and brings unique learning experiences to the table that they are more than happy to share with you!

Co-Op

March 2019 - October 2020 • Windsor Locks, CT

What I liked

The flexibility with regard to my student status. Good experience, very hands on.

What I wish was different

Role was not a traditional co-op role. Very difficult to move around within the company, although co-op’s traditionally rotate departments to get a well rounded learning experience.

Advice

I would advise that a potential candidate uses job boards, reviews, and uses websites such as Glassdoor or indeed to research any company they work for and make sure it is a good fit.

Materials Engineering Intern

May 2020 • Fort Worth, TX

What I liked

I like how their intern programas really well developed so there were a lot of resources available to interns. I also liked that I was given multiple advisors and career partners that worked with me on career development.

What I wish was different

That it was in person. However Covid made that impossible.

Advice

Apply apply apply. 1. Start applying early (as soon as the semester starts) Make a list of desirable internships and what stage of applying you are at and put it somewhere where you see it daily. 2. Call or email the hiring manager and thank them for the opportunity to apply and also do it after you interview 3. Do your research. Stalk the hiring manager/your potential manager and the company on linked in. Be able to converse about both. What drew you to our company is a big question. 4. Make friends and network all you can. I have called up friends of a friend with the intent of networking and it works really well. If you are professional about it they will almost always refer you. Make sure to maintain the relationships you never know when they could work out again.

What I wish was different

I wish I had a mentor or someone who could help me out with my work. Trying to find someone that could help out and answer questions has been very difficult due to how busy everyone is.
