I enjoyed getting an idea of the career possibilities in my field. I was given a pretty independent role, and feel like I gained a better sense of responsibility as well as confidence in a professional setting.

Research Intern

What I liked
It was an unforgettable experience that not only allowed me to gain research experience but also learn about various research methods and topics. The people in the program are unforgettable, and you spend so much time with your colleagues. I thoroughly enjoy our end of the program beach trip. We spend a wonderful day at the beach and conclude with a fancy dinner treated to us by the program. It was also a wonderful networking opportunity. I still keep in touch with many people at UMASS. I spent two summers there and had the most wonderful time.
What I wish was different
There was nothing I could have changed about my experience.
Advice
Don't be scared to network and make connections with different researchers.

Clinical Research Associate
May - August 2018 • Worcester, MA
What I liked
I loved being in the medical setting! My internship was at UMass Medical Center but under the Medical School’s Division of Plastic Surgery. I enjoyed consenting patients for our ongoing studies and follow up by eating their surgeons in the OR with the UMass plastic surgeons, as well as seeing the patients post op in clinic. It was a fun cycle to watch!
What I wish was different
I wish i was bold enough to ask the surgeons, residents and medical students if there were any additional case studies i could jump on and help out with, with hopes to get some work published.
Advice
Keep pushing, the work is demanding but not hard. Stay motivated by watching everyone dominate in their fields of experitise and use that as fuel to pursue your own dreams.

Summer Research Fellow
May - August 2018 • Worcester, MA
What I liked
The program organizers are incredible people who are eager to share their knowledge and experiences with the fellows. More importantly, the principal investigators who host students are some of the brightest minds in biomedical research.
What I wish was different
The hours are quite restrictive and don't provide the flexibility that research generally requires.
Advice
Be prepared for the hours and be ready to learn. There's a lot to gain here if you are interested in the kind of research done at the university.
