Student Rehabilitation Aide

What I liked

I love how involved I am in assisting the OTs and PTs. Instead of standing to the side and observing the OT & PT sessions, I am actively involved in the treatment. Whether it be setting up a patients chair, or physically assisting the patient out of bed. I am an active member in the treatment process which really helps broaden my experience in the field.

What I wish was different

I do not wish anything to be different, since I am already so involved. The hands-on learning is a really important part of my education and makes such a huge difference.

Advice

If you get the chance to work in the field as an undergrad student, do it. This hands-on experience has helped me learn a lot about what I will actually be doing as an OT. It is so helpful to see it first-hand, rather than learning about it through a textbook or a class. Hands-on learning is such an important part of an education.

What I liked

Having the opportunity to grow and work with a diverse group of people from all different backgrounds. I was able to create life long relationships with co-workers and fellow interns from various departments.

What I wish was different

My only complaints are that I wish the experience had been longer and the application process does start late compared to other internships.

Advice

During this internship take advantage of every opportunity presented to you to socialize and meet as many workers as physically possible. There are a ton of networking opportunities to take advantage of, as well as various educational experiences for the healthcare field.

Research assistant

What I liked

I enjoyed the clinical patient experience. We got to see tons of diabetes patients and a couple of special endocrine cases. I was able to work with Dr. Lipska at Yale and we did public health research in New Haven and throughout the hospital. It was really interesting and fun.

What I wish was different

I had to do a lot of work on the computer, and a lot of reading and research. I wish the work was a little easier, but it was very rewarding.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask a ton of questions. It may seem super scary to not know anything, but the only way to learn is from your employer. I think I should have collaborated a little bit more with the physicians and the groups that I was apart of.

Student Nurse Intern

What I liked

My experience as a student nurse intern at Yale New Haven Hospital gave me the confidence to interact with patients and provide patient-centered care. I worked side-by-side with an experienced Registered Nurse to care for 4-5 patients during a 12-hour shift two times a week. I was given the opportunity to participate in patient care, perform nursing skills, and observe medication administration amongst other things. Yale New Haven Hospital provides a positive learning environment in which students are accepted and encouraged to ask questions and participate in care.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been given the opportunity to administer medication under the Register Nurse's supervision, however, the observation of this skill was enough to teach me about the mechanisms of action of various medications and their routes of administration.

Advice

The advice I would share about this experience is to not be afraid to ask questions about any part of patient care, whether it be a certain skill or rationale for treatment. The best way to learn is to involve yourself in patient care and ensure that you understand every aspect of such care.
